Domain Redirector
From Campus Web Server Help
Sometimes, customers want a nasty URL shortened or branded. Sometimes, they host the site on their own server and simply don't know how to configure redirects and virtual hosts. For these reasons, we have created the Domain Redirector feature of UGA Web Hosting.
For example, if your departmental site is buried at http://terry.uga.edu/some/department/cms/index.php?blah, you may request a domain redirect from EITS to have http://terrydept.uga.edu or http://terrydept.terry.uga.edu automatically forward to http://terry.uga.edu/some/department/cms/index.php?blah
These redirects will remain in place for one year, at which time, the requester will be required to confirm the continued need for the redirect. There is no user or password to mess with.
Requesting a Domain Redirect
To request a redirect, please contact the EITS Help Desk (phone 706-542-3106).
Caveats
Cheating the system (with redirects) is not without risk. This feature adds one more single point of failure to your site's configuration. It requires that our web server be available to forward the request to the longer, real URL.
As of 2/22/12, this service is reliant upon only one web server, not our entire cluster. This service is not load balanced.
SSL redirection is not provided. For example, https://mydept.uga.edu will not redirect; only http://mydept.uga.edu will. This is to avoid certificate mismatch errors and to reduce complexity on the server. The expectation is that you will not put https on fliers, etc., and that most references to these short URLs will be verbal.
Also, this is not a proxy service. The address bar will reflect the long URL after the redirect takes place.
